SAVE THE WATTS TOWERS FROM LOS ANGELES' RECREATIONAL PLANS
December 2011
Dear Friends,
Our efforts to stop the construction of the Skateboard Park at the
Watts Towers have been fruitful.
The project has been put on hold.
And, better yet, it now looks like the area originally designated
for the skateboard park will become a green park!
The Los Angeles City Department of Recreation and Parks – which now
has responsibility for the site adjacent to the Watts Towers – has
recognized the environmental and community concerns raised by a
skateboard park and has started a series of community meetings to
determine the best use of the area adjacent to the Towers.
And the Parks for People program of the non-profit Trust for Public
Land – dedicated to establishing green parks in urban areas – is
working with Recreation and Parks to implement these meetings and
develop a workable design for enlarging the green area around the
Watts Towers.
I will continue to keep you informed of how the planning for the
area around the Watts Towers develops and I will let you know if we
need to raise our voices again – with concern or praise.
Thank you for your kind attention.
